What is BOKS?BOKS is a before-school program that provides elementary school children opportunities for physical activity. The program is a step in showing children the benefits of exercise and healthy choices. BOKS helps children jump start their brains to better equip them for a day of learning. Powered by communities, BOKS is designed to involve parents, school faculty and administration and community members as advocates, trainers and volunteers.
A typical BOKS day:
BOKS incorporates fun, non-competitive, games to encourage elementary school students of different skill levels and abilities to participate. BOKS suggests having 2-3 classes per week for 40 minutes each class. Sessions run for 11 weeks on average. There should be a 1 adult : 20 participant ratio. A day’s agenda includes:
- Fun warm-up game or movement drills
- Running activity, relay races, obstacle courses and strength movements
- End of class group game
- Cool down and BOKS Bit, a short nutrition tip about making healthy choices

BOKS can be implemented by anyone; parent, faculty or community member by following these steps:
- Assess school fit
- Get approval from principal
- Take the BOKS pledge
- Spread the word
- Have an amazing BOKS session
