Bring BOKS to your Elementary School

Get Involved

The Program

What is BOKS?

BOKS is a before-school program that provides elementary school children opportunities for physical activity. The program is a step in showing children the benefits of exercise and healthy choices.  BOKS helps children jump start their brains to better equip them for a day of learning.  Powered by communities, BOKS is designed to involve parents, school faculty and administration and community members as advocates, trainers and volunteers.

A typical BOKS day:

BOKS incorporates fun, non-competitive, games to encourage elementary school students of different skill levels and abilities to participate.  BOKS suggests having 2-3 classes per week for 40 minutes each class.  Sessions run for 11 weeks on average.  There should be a 1 adult : 20 participant ratio.  A day’s agenda includes:

  • Fun warm-up game or movement drills
  • Running activity, relay races, obstacle courses and strength movements
  • End of class group game
  • Cool down and BOKS Bit, a short nutrition tip about making healthy choices
